Senior Manager Accountant

Department:Accounts & Business TaxReports to:Managing Director


To manage resources within the team to oversee the provision of timely and effective delivery of general accounting and taxation services to an established portfolio of clients leading on service delivery and client relationships. To be responsible for managing and servicing a portfolio of clients. To work closely with the Senior Management Team to deliver on the growth strategy of the business.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, monitor work and resources within an agreed budgets to meet deadlines and targets set.
  • Manage and develop a portfolio of clients.
  • Manage the team to ensure Senior Management expectations are met on delivery and accuracy of work.
  • Lead on developing excellent client service and relationships with clients and the team.
  • Manage the allocation of work within the team.
  • Review accounts for quality and compliance ensuring completion of file and recording notes and review points.
  • Take responsibility to coach and develop team members giving constructive feedback to enhance their skills and development.
  • Liaise with other departments in order to efficiently and effectively complete jobs.
  • Participate in projects, contribute to team and business initiatives.
  • Manage the work in progress and billing of client portfolio.
  • Provide technical advice to the team and clients as required.
  • Recruit, train and develop members of the team to ensure there are sufficient resources and skills in the team to meet current demand and planned growth.
  • Work in collaboration with the team to share knowledge and ideas to improve communication, set team goals and recognise achievements.
  • Carry out appraisals for team members to set appropriate objectives, review progress and develop skills.
  • Build knowledge and awareness of all aspects of the business services to help identify opportunities to cross sell services to clients and communicate this to the team.
  • Support marketing and business development initiatives to increase client portfolio and new business.

Payroll Manager

AJ Chambers are currently recruiting for an experienced, IT literate, Payroll Manager with first class interpersonal skills to join our clients' Accountancy Practice at their friendly office based in Barnet, Hertfordshire.

The successful applicant will be well educated and articulate, with strong knowledge of UK PAYE compliance and recent experience of managing a portfolio of clients and/or staff. Bureau (multiple payroll) experience is essential.

The salary offered is in the region of £40,000 to £45,000 (dependent on experience), plus attractive benefits and learning opportunities.

Job Description

Main duties of the role will include;

End to end payroll processing on Sage - weekly, fortnightly, monthly, 4-weekly, quarterly and annually - providing clients with payslips and relevant information for around 200 clients

Managing and delegating work to junior payroll staff as well as liaising with an outsourcing company for payroll support

Setting up auto-enrolment schemes and submitting details to pension providers

Calculating apprenticeship levy

Provide banks with autopay information

Advise HMRC when no payment is due

Resolve any PAYE/CIS queries raised by HMRC

Process and submit monthly CIS returns, issue tax deduction slips,

End of year procedures - P35, P60's, P11D's and Section 336 Claims

Calculate redundancy pay

Calculation of SMP and SSP

Advise clients of changes to payroll legislation/personal allowances when necessary

Set-up new schemes with HMRC as and when required

Provide general payroll advice when required

Assistant Manager - Accounts

AJ Chambers are currently representing a reputable, award-winning firm of chartered accountants who are seeking an experienced Assistant Manager for their accounts team in Bury St Edmunds. This is a varied position that offers a great deal of autonomy and excellent opportunities for progression.

The Role

The team assists a wide variety of businesses including limited companies, partnerships, sole traders, educational establishments, professional firms and charities, operating across a variety of sectors

Duties include:

  • Manage multiple engagements simultaneously whilst also taking a lead on client contact
  • Train and mentor junior members of staff, reviewing aspects of the work they produce
  • Drafting and reviewing accounts
  • Drafting tax computations and tax returns
  • Production of/reporting on management accounts
  • Completion of VAT and P11D returns for clients
  • Oversee client engagement teams, monitor engagement profitability
  • If you have audit experience and wish to keep your hand in some audit work, this can be arranged but will be a minor element of the position

The Candidate

  • ACA/ACCA qualified or able to demonstrate the relevant experience
  • Sound working knowledge of a variety of accounting packages
  • A proven track record of working to deadlines and effectively handling multiple priorities, with a positive attitude to problem-solving and working in a small team
  • A vigilant approach to dealing with sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills and a keen eye for detail. A confident approach in dealing with clients is essential
